There are over 500 compounds in marijuana, over 80 of which are used in medicine and science.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): The best known compound. Produces psychoactive effects. It has been shown to be a mild pain reliever, sleep aid, and antioxidant.
Cannabidiol (CBD): Primary constituent extracted for medicinal use. Relieves spasms, inflammation, anxiety, cough, congestion, and nausea. Has been shown to inhibit the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Cannabidiol (CBN): Inhibits the growth and spread of cancer cells.
B - Caryophyllene: Used to reduce inflammation.
Cannabigerol reduces intraocular pressure and is used in the treatment of glaucoma.
glaucoma.
Marijuana and its compounds affect the body's endocannabinoid system. Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring enzymes found throughout the body (brain, organs, connective tissues, etc.) In each location, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always homeostasis (maintaining a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment). This is what allows it to treat so many conditions. The endocannabinoid system is also what promotes the process of keeping normal cells alive, allowing them to maintain a balance between synthesis, degradation and recycling of cellular products. Because of this, it has a deadly effect on malignant (cancerous) tumor cells. It causes these cancer cells to consume themselves in a programmed "cellular suicide".
Indica vs. Sativa
Different strains of marijuana have different effects on the body than others, meaning that some strains are better for certain conditions than others. Finding your strain can be a fun process if you have the right information. All marijuana strains can be divided into three categories:
Indica
Sativa
Hybrids
Indica
Tend to be sedating and relaxing with a full body high.
Indica
Tends to be sedating and relaxing with full body effects. Acts as a sleep aid, muscle relaxant and appetite stimulant. Relieves symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, pain, nausea, muscle spasms, headaches, and migraines.
Sativas
Tends to be uplifting, euphoric and creative with cerebrally focused effects. Increases alertness, energy, sociability, and concentration. Relieves symptoms of depression, ADD, fatigue, and mood disorders.
Hybrids
Many Indica/Sativa hybrids exist to combat the greater variety of diseases and to make it easier to grow in certain locations. Some hybrids are mostly Indica, some are mostly Sativa, and some are a 50/50 split. Which hybrid is best for you depends on your symptoms.
